Grandmaster Dong’s Martial Arts was voted as a “Top 10 Martial Arts School" in the USA by the US Tae Kwon Do and Martial Arts Grandmasters Federation.
Grandmaster Dong inducted into Hall of Fame
Grandmaster Dong was inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame on December 3. He received the award for his "Technical Advancement" of the martial arts. The event was hosted by the US Taekwondo & Martial Arts Grandmasters Federation. Other Grandmasters receiving the Hall of Fame awards at the Washington, D.C. banquet were: Grandmaster Jhoon Rhee, Grandmaster Myung Hak Kang, Grandmaster Chun-jae Park PHD, Grandmaster Eunggil Choi, Grandmaster Tiger Yang. Having a little fun with a Mannequin Challenge
Students and guests participated in the Mannaquin Challenge between classes on Thursday, November 17. The goal was to have everyone freeze in place at the same time while taking the video.
82nd Black Belt Exam
Twelve students from Morehead City earned their black belts at Grandmaster Dong’s 82nd Black Belt Exam on October 1st in Richmond, VA. Back-to-School Fun Night

Demo Team Performs at Crystal Coast Showdown
Our Demonstration Team performed during half-time at the Commit2Achieve Crystal Coast Showdown basketball game on August 7 at West Carteret High School. Proceeds from this charity event benefit MS and Colon Cancer Research.
Super Hero Camp
BAM! POW! ZAP!
Students learned special superhero sidekick training, enjoyed a super maze, games, crafts and a visit from superheroes... Captain America and Spider-Man.
"Do or Do Not, there is no try!" Our students learned the way of the force as they trained with Jedi Knights. They learned Lightsaber skills, how to build there own droid (craft), how to use the force for good and more!
Pirates vs Ninjas
ARRR ye ready to choose a side? Pirates and Ninjas alike practiced balance, agility and speed while learning to navigate the high-seas and move with stealth.
Wine & Design
We enjoyed visiting the Artbuzz Kids Camp at Wine & Design in Morehead City. They learned some fun stretches and some martial arts moves.
Visit to the Reading Program at County Library
Instructor Shannon along with some demo team members shared martial arts with a couple of Elementary summer reading program groups. The children also enjoyed martial arts themed books for their reading program.
Father’s Day Class
Dads and Granddads joined their kids for a special martial arts class on Monday, June 20. After learning fun drills they can do with their kids and some self-defense techniques, the Dads earned their camo belt.
Sharing at the County Libraries
Instructor Shannon Henry visited the Down East Library in Otway on June 20th to read a story with the kids and share a positive message. The story this week was “The Three Ninja Pigs” after which the kids enjoyed learning some karate moves.
Instructor Shannon Henry had a great time visiting with the Book Buddies at the Western Carteret Library on June 21st. After story time, the kids heard a positive message, enjoyed a breif demonstration from a couple students and them learn a few techniques of their own.
Annual Touranment for the Children’s Hospital
Grandmaster Dong’s 45th Anniversary tournament to benefit the Children’s Hospital Foundation at VCU was held on June 4, 2016. This years' event raised $38,456 for CHoR. Since the envents beganin the 90’s, more than $463,000 has been donated to the Hospital at VCU.
Forty students from the Morehead City school participated in this years’ tournament and earned 1st through 3rd place meadls in the event. The Morehead City Demo Team performed to a cheering crowd as they took a “Journey Through Pop Culture.”

Run/Walk for Autism
We were proud to sponsor this years’ Run/Walk for Autism to support our local Crystal Coast Chapter held on Saturday, May 14 in Beaufort, NC. Instructors and students aslo enjoyed participating in the events.
Mother’s Day Class
Students invited their mothers and grandmothers to join them for a special Mother's Day class on Monday, May 9. Thirty-seven parents received their pink belts while learning basic techniques, self-defense, and fun drills to do with their children.
Students Earn Black Belts at 81st Black Belt Exam
April 30, 2016 - Morehead City student tested for black belt in front of Grandmaster Dong and other Master. They were among more than 150 testing for 1st through 5th degree black belt.

Parent's Date Night (aka Fun Night)
Our annual Valentine's Fun night is a night out for parents while the kids enjoy an evening at the studio. This year's activities included, movie, games, crafts, light saber battle, photo booth and a snowball fight.
Kung Fu Panda 3 premier
Over 100 students and guests joined us for the opening of Kung Fu Panda 3 at Atlantic Station Cinema this evening. Our mascot, Master Grr, greeted the near capacity crowd along with our demo team members. Just before the movie the demo team gave a short performance including forms, basic techniques and board breaking.

Students earn Black Belts from Grandmaster
Thirteen students and an instructor from the Morehead City, NC were among 150 promoted at Grandmaster Dong’s 80th Black Belt Exam held in Richmond, VA on October 24, 2015. Instructor Shannon Henry earned 3rd degree Black Belt and took part in a traditional tea ceremony with Grandmaster Dong. Ryan Winstead, Clayton Daniels and Austin Purifoy earned 2nd degree black belt. 1st degree Black belts were earned by Caleb Conneely, Alex Craft, Lauren Drysdale, Grace Fortin, Liam Fortin, Sam Fortin, Gabriel Graham, Erica Hensly, Linda Izaguirre, and Cameron Tydings. Self-defense Seminar for Chick-fil-A
Staff members of the Chick-fil-A in Morehead City joined us for a self-defense seminar on July 12. After learning some techniques, they learned to break a board.

Grandmaster Dong's Martial Arts sponsored the 2015 Run Like a Kid Storybook Run (10k/5/k/1 mile Fun Run). The event hosted by the Cateret County Partnership for Children was held on Saturday, April 4, 2015. Runners and walkers dressed as their favorite storybook characters to support childhood literacy! Local mascots, including our own, Master Grr, also participated in the Mascot Dash. Race proceeds go to the Reach Out and Read Program. A breaking seminar was held on October 10 for children and adults. Students learned breaking safety, how to hold, and a variety of breaking techniques. The spectators were then witness to the students' breaking routines. Watch the video below for the highlights.
Sharing with the 1st Grade at Newport Elementary
Instructors gave a presentation to 1st grade students at Newport Elementary on Tuesday, June 3, 2014. A brief discussion about martial arts was followed by active participation and a positive message from Master Henry. The 1st-graders were then amazed at the board breaking demonstrations performed by a few of their classmates that were students of Grandmaster Dong's Martial Arts. They then cheered as some of their teachers learned to break a board of their own.
Carteret County Girl Scouts enjoyed self-defense seminars on Saturday, May 11. Five age-specific classes were offered for Girl Scouts ranging in age from 5 to 16. Subjects included situational awareness, stranger, telephone, Internet safety and bully prevention, as well as dating safety for the older girls. The Girl Scouts received both lecture and hands-on application of safety techniques. Each of the girls also received a custom badge for the completion of their class. Read official press release
Instructor Elected to CCPC Board
March 2013 - Instructor Shannon Henry was elected to the Board of Directors for the Carteret County Partnership for Children. The Partnership "is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to serving children from birth through age 5. The programs are funded by local donors The Carteret Community Foundation and Smart Start. The Partnership provides or funds "many programs that promote Smart Start's mission of helping all children in NC enter school healthy, motivated and ready to succeed."

Grandmaster Seung Dong, re-released his most recent book "Where is My Black Belt?" in digital format at Amazon.com. The book, originally released in paperback in 2006, tells a story about martial arts technique and philosophy through eyes of Cookie, the squirrel that lives in the attic of the karate school. 151 pages. College Scholarship Awarded
Congratulations to Lindsey B. of Beaufort for being awarded our $500 Vision, Value, Victory scholarship to Carteret Community College. Lindsey, a wife and mother of one, is returning to college to earn her degree in cosmetology, something she has wanted to do since graduating high school.
