The money raised goes towards supporting local families affected by autism in Carteret and Craven counties. Programs funded from last years' event included a therapeutic summer camp, music therapy, art classes and a cariety of social programs for individuals with autism and their families. Grandmaster Dong's Martial Arts is pround to sponsor the 2014 Ultimate Family Fun Quest to be held on Saturday, May 3 at the Morehead City Civic Center. From 10:00 am until 2:00 pm the event will feature fun for the whole family including games foods, demonstrations, tree climbing and more. Admission is one NEW children's book per family. Sponsor - Run Like A Kid - 10k/5k/1 mile Fun Walk
Grandmaster Dong's Martial Arts sponsored the 2014 Run Like a Kid Storybook Run (10k/5/k/1 mile Fun Run). The event hosted by the Cateret County partnership for Childre was held on Saturday, April 5, 2014. Runners and walkers dressed as their favorite storybook characters to support childhood literacy! Fancy Nancy, Waldo, dalmations, Flash Gordon along with some princesses were among those enjoyng the event. Race proceeds go to the Reach Out and Read Program. Local Students Earn Black Belt from Grandmaster
Seven Morehead City students earned black belts from Grandmaster Dong on October 5, 2013 in Richmond. Instructor Shannon Henry, achieved the rank of 2nd degree black belt. Over 170 martial arts students from VA and NC tested during the exam for various degrees.
Annual Children's Hospital Benefit Tournament Raises $25,585
The annual martial arts tournament to benefit the Children's Hospital was held on May 4, 2013 in Richmond, VA. Nearly 300 students and more than 2,000 spectators were in attendance. This year's tournament raised $25,585, bringing the grand total to more than $350,000 through these events.
Girl Scouts Get a Kick Out of Safety Seminar
Carteret County Girl Scouts enjoyed self-defense seminars on Saturday, May 11. Five age-specific classes were offered for Girl Scouts ranging in age from 5 to 16. Subjects included situational awareness, stranger, telephone, Internet safety and bully prevention, as well as dating safety for the older girls. The Girl Scouts received both lecture and hands-on application of safety techniques. Each of the girls also received a custom badge for the completion of their class. Read official press release
It was one of the proudest moments of my life. To look at my boy and reflect on his journey; the struggles, the joy, and his monumental acheivement of Black Belt made me so proud. Three Earn Black Belts from Grandmaster
Ryan Winstead, Clayton Daniels and Austin Purifoy of Carteret County earned their black belts from Grandmaster Dong at the semi-annual Black Belt Exam held in Richmond, VA. Over 150 martial arts students earned various degrees of black belt by demonstrating their skills in forms, sparring and breaking. After the belt presentation, a Korean, traditional tea ceremony was held for the new, senior black belts and four new Masters. Official Press Release
Instructor Elected to CCPC Board
March 2013 - Instructor Shannon Henry was elected to the Board of Directors for the Carteret County Partnership for Children. The Partnership "is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to serving children from birth through age 5. The programs are funded by local donors The Carteret Community Foundation and Smart Start. The Partnership provides or funds "many programs that promote Smart Start's mission of helping all children in NC enter school healthy, motivated and ready to succeed."
Ms. Henry also serves on the Board of Directors for Shape Carteret, a non-profit whose mission is "To build a better community by promoting healthy eating and active living."
Grandmaster Dong Releases Book in Digital Format
Grandmaster Seung Dong, re-released his most recent book "Where is My Black Belt?" in digital format at Amazon.com. The book, originally released in paperback in 2006, tells a story about martial arts technique and philosophy through eyes of Cookie, the squirrel that lives in the attic of the karate school. 151 pages.
College Scholarship Awarded
Congratulations to Lindsey B. of Beaufort for being awarded our $500 Vision, Value, Victory scholarship to Carteret Community College. Lindsey, a wife and mother of one, is returning to college to earn her degree in cosmetology, something she has wanted to do since graduating high school. We wish her great success in reaching her goals.
Instructor Earns Master Level 5th Degree Black Belt
Phillip Henry, owner and instructor at the Morehead City school, earned his 5th degree black belt at the 73rd Black Belt Exam held April 28, 2012 in Richmond, VA. The exam was conducted by 9th degree Grandmaster Seung G. Dong along with over 30 masters from the organization. After demonstrating forms, sparring and breaking, Grandmaster Dong held a traditional tea ceremony for his advanced black belts where he recognizes them as his direct student.
